Fred Whitton Challenge 2012

Saddleback are proud sponsors of the Fred Whitton Challenge. Quite possibly the toughest sportive in the UK over a gruelling 112 mile course, climbing in excess of 4000m with gradients over 30%.

Cycling Plus has the Fred Whitton as the first event in its top ten best sportives as voted for by you!

This is what Cycing Plus has to say on the Saddleback sponsored event;

"The Fred Whitton is know to be one of the toughest sportives out theree. The list of killer climbs is pretty daunting including Kirkstone, Matterdale, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott and Wrynose. Any cyclist conquering just one of these 300m plus Lake District passes during a day ride can be proud of themselves. And its even harder than that - take part and you will also enjoy riding up Hawkshead Hill, Fangs Brow, Kelton Fell, Cold Fell and Irton Pike. Check out the course profile and you could easily be fooled into thinking your looking at one of the tougher Alpine stages of the Tour de France."

The event start/finish is Coniston, Cumbria.

The 2012 version is on 13th May.

Its a 112mile circuit (please note there are few places to cut corners once you get half way you are commited).

The event is open to 1400 riders and is always sold out early.

The fastest time in 2011 was 6h 05 min.

The slowest recorded time for 2011 was 12h 36min.
