Sidi is the original cycling shoe innovator and has continued to refine the connection between rider and pedal for over 40 years. Often imitated, Sidi's influence on the world of cycling footwear cannot be overstated: if it's a feature that's become standard in high-end cycling shoe design, the chances are it originates with this prestigious Italian brand.
Sidi's unique blend of heritage, innovation and professional development is more alive than ever, Chris Froome having worn Sidi Wire Carbon shoes to victory in the 2015 Tour de France and following up with another win in 2016 wearing prototype Sidi Shot shoes.
In addition to Froome, many other stars of both road cycling and mountain biking choose the brand's shoes for their legendary comfort – Romain Bardet, Adam Yates, Richie Porte, Esteban Chaves, Marcel Kittel, Nino Schurter and Julien Absalon to name just a few.
In over four decades of creating cycling shoes, Sidi has earned an incomparable reputation for innovative design and an enviably close association with professional cycling. The brand has long been recognised as the driving force behind cycling shoe development and the abundance of Sidi-wearing Grand Tour winners and world champions have established its credentials for comfort and performance at the highest levels of the sport.
The source of Sidi's pioneering designs originates, on the whole, from Dino Signori, who founded the company in 1960 and, now in his 80s, still has a big day-to-day impact on the business. First focusing on hiking and ski boots, cycling became the focus in 1973 when Signori, a talented junior racer, ended a 17-year hiatus from the sport to find the cycling shoes of the day less than satisfactory.
This prompted the creation of Sidi's first cycling shoe, Signori doing away with the then ubiquitous nailed-on cleat and developing the world's first adjustable version – a three-bolt design made from leather and titanium.
The birth of the modern cleat drew stars such as Francesco Moser, Bernard Hinault, Laurent Fignon and Sean Kelly to Sidi's shoes – inaugurating and then strengthening the brand's position as the professional's choice. That initial brainwave was followed by a stream of firsts that soon put Sidi into the leader's jersey within the cycling shoe world.
In 1979 Sidi introduced the first nylon-soled shoes; 1983 saw the first use of Velcro; Sidi's first off-road shoe launched in 1985; the ratcheting caliper buckle was added in 1989, followed by the rotary buckle system in 1993.
By 1999, the quality and reliability of Sidi's shoes were so well established that mountain bikers called for replaceable treads – the only part of their shoes to wear out despite rough treatment on the trails.
The 2000s saw Sidi's development of High-Security Velcro to avoid strap slippage and the first use of carbon in sole construction in 2002. The first full carbon sole was launched in 2006 along with the brand's reinforced Heel Security System to avoid heel lift – given an adjustable set-up in 2007. In 2011, Sidi launched its Vent carbon sole, which gives adjustable ventilation, followed by the Tecno 3 rotary buckle, which in 2012 combined a braided synthetic line with incremental two-way ratcheting for a custom fit.
For 2016, Sidi worked with multiple Tour de France winner Chris Froome to develop the Shot, a new flagship model with centrally aligned dials for an even comfier fit. The shoe also features increased visibility thanks to glow in the dark technology and improved airflow through the upper. There's also an MTB version – the Tiger – which has already been raced to victory by XC superstar Nino Schurter.
All this industry-leading development show Sidi's continued drive to be first and the company's dedication in pursuit of perfecting the interface between rider and bike. It's these qualities that makes Sidi the most respected cycling footwear brand in the world.
Sidi joined Saddleback in September 2015 following a fallow period for the Italian brand in the UK market. As exclusive UK distributor, we are committed to representing Sidi in a way that befits the most esteemed shoemaker in cycling; bringing a broader selection and greater stock of the brand's shoes to the UK than ever before.
The Sidi Wire Carbon Froome is a special edition model of Sidi's flagship road shoe that replicates the design used by chris froome during his victorious 2015 Tour de France campaign.
The Wire Carbon Froome packs in over 40 years of Sidi know-how and innovation, utilising several of the industry firsts for which Sidi has become known. The ultra light, super stiff Vent carbon sole allows additional airflow if desired via a sliding cover under the toebox. The Tecno-3 Push closure system uses wire lacing and a rotary dial for a custom, adjustable fit. The shoe also features a central button to allow faster on-the-bike tweaking, a feature added following pro feedback.
Sidi's reinforced heel cup stabilises and supports the heel while the Adjustable Heel Retention Device gives a custom fit to eliminate heel slippage. The replaceable polyurethane heel pad extends the shoes' life while the iconic Soft Instep strap – like the dials – can also be customised in different colours.
