A brand new all-road wheelset, the ENVE SES 4.5 AR Disc balances aerodynamics, comfort and stability over rough surfaces
The new ENVE SES 4.5 AR Disc is the made-in-the-USA brand's new 'all road' wheelset, created to take on rough roads and gravel riding while providing optimal aerodynamics for wider 28-30mm tyres – along with disc-brake stopping power.
ENVE has based the 4.5 AR on rim shaping prototyped earlier this year and tested by Team Dimension Data at Paris-Roubaix, but the new wheelset was designed from scratch with ENVE's characteristic attention to detail to make the best possible combination of aerodynamics, comfort and stability.
Wind tunnel testing yielded the optimum depths of 49mm front and 55mm rear for use with the wider tyres, keeping to the differing profiles seen across the brand's wheel line-up. ENVE has developed the tubular version of the 4.5 AR for 30mm wide tubs while the clincher version is best used with 28mm tyres, which measure around 30mm when installed, both giving an aero advantage. The clincher version is also tubeless ready.
The 31mm front and 30.5mm rear rim widths mean an internal width of 25mm – all about the same dimensions as ENVE's M70 mountain bike wheels, giving an indication of the stability on offer with the new wheels. Meanwhile, like the 5.6 and 7.8 Disc rims, the use of disc brakes means there's been no engineering compromise thanks to the lack of a reinforced brake track.
