29-inch Intense Primer sets a new benchmark for aggressive trail riding

Following up on the huge success of the ACV, Intense has launched perhaps its most impressive JS-Tuned bike yet – the full carbon, trail-eating Primer 29er.

If you thought 29ers couldn't be hardcore, think again. With 130mm travel front and back, you could be forgiven for thinking you'll reach the Primer's limits when the going gets tough, but put those thoughts behind you – it's a bike tailor-made for aggressive trail use. The Primer feels light and nimble, yet incredibly composed on steeper rougher terrain that traditionally wouldn't be a natural home for a 130mm trail bike

Designed by trendsetting MTB guru Jeff Steber, the Primer's inspired geometry and perfect suspension tune meets spot-on frame compliance in a 29-inch wheel package that devours trail obstacles. It'll have you taking on jumps and squaring off turns like no 29er you've ever experienced before. The Primer is even getting 29er naysayers on board – none more so than our reformed 29er-resisting brand manager, Martin Astley.

"On paper the Primer wasn't the bike for me. My eyes have well and truly been opened though; the Primer is the bike I have reached for more than any other in my arsenal since I received my sample. I am completely and utterly sold on this bike." It's a message that's also struck a chord with the MTB press – keep an eye out for some incredible feedback on the new bike.

Without riding it, it's hard to tell why the Primer is so much more than the sum of its parts. Somehow the short 438mm chainstays, long reach geometry, low BB and JS-Tuned floating dual pivot suspension beg you to push yourself harder and faster, rewarding you with a magical riding experience.

What's easier to quantify is how the spec choices contribute to the bike's performance. Across each price point, from the range-topping Primer Factory to the Pro, Expert and Foundation builds, Intense has continued its holistic approach to bike design by giving riders thoughtful component choices that complement the bike's character and mean you won't be reaching for upgrades on the day of purchase.

The Primer Factory and Pro models are some of the first production bikes to use SRAM's new 12-speed Eagle 1x groups (note that these weren't available in time for the test bike pictured here). The Factory also features a Fox Factory 34 Float fork and Fox Factory Float shock. The extra stiffness of Boost hubs tallies with the Primer's aggressive nature while also future-proofing the frame. Up front, all models are specced with a 50mm stem and 760mm bar to take advantage of the chassis' potential. You'll also see plenty of Renthal and Race Face as well as DT Swiss wheels.

The frame itself is available in two flavours. The Factory and Pro models use an SL version of the monocoque front and rear triangles that shaves a little extra weight without giving away any stiffness or performance.
