The Saddleback Sodbury Sportive is just a few days away – get your entry in today!
The 2016 Saddleback Sodbury Sportive takes place this weekend and is gearing up to be another glorious day out around the hills and lanes of South Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds.
Returning for its fifth year, the event has proven itself a summer favourite and one of the best-organised sportives on the calendar. It's also a chance for Saddleback staff to get out and ride on local roads just north of our HQ in Yate.
With 30, 60 and 100-mile routes available, there's something for riders of all abilities. While the 1,360m of climbing on offer for century riders is a far cry from the Fred Whitton Challenge's leg-breaking 3,200m, there are still plenty of hills to test the legs.
These include five named climbs: Hawkesbury Howler; Alderley Grunt; Tresham Tester; Nailsworth Nailer; and Frocester Hill. It's only the latter two that stretch beyond a mile (at 1.6 miles apiece), but all the climbs hit at least 14 per cent with Alderley Grunt and Tresham Tester clocking up sections of 20 and 19 per cent respectively.
The 60-miler takes on the first three of those climbs while the 30-mile option takes a more sedate route with 338m of climbing and one named ascent – the Dodington Drag – to ensure first timers, families and casual riders have the chance to catch the sportive bug.
One nice touch of the Sodbury Sportive is the extra signage at the bottom of each climb, which gives riders at-a-glance stats on the effort ahead. Organisers have also included a selection of Strava segments along all the routes – both hills and sprints – for an added sense of adventure and motivation with riders vying for the fastest times over these sections.
Each route has well-stocked feed stations – three for the longest route, two for the mid-distance and one for the shorter ride – ensuring every opportunity to keep energy stores and drinks bottles topped up for what looks like it's going to be a warm summer's day.
There are still places left but they're selling fast, so get your entry in today at the Saddleback Sodbury Sportive website.
